Elder Yoon used, as the basis of his talk, the story of a group of "loud boys" who lived in his neighborhood and came to church with a couple of their member friends.
There are two basic principles that helped these young men become like the sons of Helaman. Even though the boys' mothers were not members of the Church and did not understand the words of the Lord, priesthood leaders became like their fathers, and leaders' wives became like their mothers.
These nine boys - I call them the "Boys of the Lord" - learned that they would be blessed when they listened to the Church leaders, even though they didn't always understand why.
He then goes on to talk about how successful the boys became - as men in general and as leaders in the church.
Modern sons of Helaman come not only from our precious families within the Church but also from new and young converts who do not have parents in the gospel. You and your wives are to be their "goodly parents" until they become like the sons of Helaman.

I thought this talk was very humorous and spiritual at the same time. I love the story about the young men singing group, and the humor Elder Choi adds. I like how he compares the young men to the stripling warriors
ReplyDelete"Faithful attendance at church meetings brings blessings you can receive in no other way". I think that sometimes people think, I don't need to go to that class/hear that lesson because I already know it/have heard it/have taught it enough times. BUT, like all aspects of obedience, there are blessings that come from just being where you are supposed to be, even if you have 'been there/done that'. Maybe you will be prompted on a deeper aspect of the lesson you had not thought of before, maybe your comment during the lesson will clarify for someone else, or provide them the answer to a question they have been pondering.
ReplyDeleteElder Choi was prompted to get the boys ready for missions. They learned two things that changed their lives (& prepared them for missions).
ReplyDelete1. "They would be blessed when they listened to the leaders of the church, even though they didn't always understand why."
-the next step is learning to ask if what they say is true-to get a spiritual witness & know for themselves.
2. "attending their church meetings was very important"
-because they attended, they "felt the great love of the Lord" & learned how to apply the doctrines and principles of the Church in their own daily lives and "how to participate in meetings with great joy and happiness."
We need to follow the promptings of the Spirit (& pray for these promptings) of how to help those under us (our kids, primary kids, etc.) We can be a great influence to others.
